Hosted Exchange Case Study - International Software & Technology Business Company
The problem

With offices the UK, Hong Kong and New York, this company required a high availability Microsoft Exchange environment to support its international workforce. The key requirements were the flexibility to add and delete users as the company's requirements changed, but the most important element was the need for the system to be available and supported 24 x 7 x 365.

The Solution

We quickly realized that the most appropriate business model was a rented, managed solution which utilized the Service Providers License Agreement (SPLA), allowing us to rent the software licenses and hence adjust user numbers as required by the customer.

To ensure the high availability required, we created a primary MS Exchange Server and a Domain Controller. These were supported by two Virtual Private Servers to which data was backed up in real time to enable automated fail-over in the event of a failure of either of the primary devices.

The environment also includes 2 x Cisco load balancers to facilitate the automated fail-over and a pair of auto-fail-over Cisco ASA firewalls.

The total solution ensures that there is no single point of failure and the requirement of 24 x 7 x 365 availability is met.

Hosted Exchange Case Study - Manufacturing Business Company
The problem

A modest sized manufacturing company with five administration staff who previously had used POP3 email, which didn't provide the shared resources and flexibility required to support the business. With no internal server - they operated a peer-to-peer network - there was no option of running MS Exchange Server internally.

The Solution

Using our shared Hosted Exchange platform, we created a small, five-user Exchange mailbox platform and migrated the customer's data from the POP3 mail system to MS Exchange. Using our on-site installation and support resource, we also set up their local PCs and trained the users in the new facilities available to them. This has resulted in a more efficient and productive administration and support team allowing the management better and faster access to key information such as staff availability (via shared calendars). This in turn has assisted with the growth of the business as processes are now more streamlined and efficient.

"We need a way to collate and constantly analyse our customers' purchasing requirements and habits in order to make our own sales strategies more effective, and our conversion rate higher..."

Act For Web website:

JPCi Telecom is working with Trevor LeverConsulting (TLC) to improve the whole ACT For Web experience, TLC having used ACT For Web software since 1989 to run their own sales and marketing operations.

Together with TLC we approach contact management purely from a business perspective. Over the years we have probably made all of the classic contact management mistakes - and learned from them. The result is a wealth of experience in using ACT For Web to manage a variety of sales processes, experience that TLC has now passed on to numerous other organisations.

What we've done is develop a number of tools and procedures to ensure that your ACT For Web implementation goes to plan, budget and expectations. If you prefer to focus on your customers and their requirements, rather than your computer and IT department, then working with JPCi Telecom and TLC is the choice for you.

Designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from your private network, Firewalls can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both. JPCi firewalls will prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing those of your private networks connected to the internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving will pass through our Firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet your specified security criteria.

We can supply a number of different types of Firewall:

  • Packet filter: Looks at each packet entering or leaving the network and accepts or rejects it based on user-defined rules. Packet filtering is fairly effective and transparent to users, but it is difficult to configure. In addition, it is susceptible to IP spoofing.
  • Application gateway: Applies security mechanisms to specific applications, such as FTP and Telnet servers. This is very effective, but can result in performance degradation.
  • Circuit-level gateway: Applies security mechanisms when a TCP or UDP connection is established. Once the connection has been made, packets can flow between the hosts without further checking.
  • Proxy server: Intercepts all messages entering and leaving the network. The proxy server effectively hides the true network addresses.

In practice, we usually implement two or more of these techniques together. Remember that a Firewall is considered a first line of defense in protecting private information. For greater security we can help you with encryption.

MPLS VPNs provide the privacy and security of a Frame Relay or ATM network, yet they allow the inherent any-to-any connectivity and routing flexibility typical of an IP network. It's the best of both worlds. In addition, JPCi Telecoms' MPLS VPNs provide three other important elements:

  • Service Level Agreements that are critical to application convergence and they also support voice, video and data on one network.
  • MPLS VPNs are a natural platform for dynamic Disaster Recovery. Based on IP routing, it's simple to support multiple data centres in a load sharing or primary/backup scenario.
  • MPLS VPNs simplify data centre architecture. Unlike Frame Relay and ATM, you are not limited by having to manage several Point-to-Point direct connections to remote sites.

MPLS Layer 3 VPNs are based on RFC2547bis. This standard defines mechanisms intended to keep individual VPNs completely private and separate from each other. While the data traverses a shared infrastructure, you can be assured that your VPNs are maintained and monitored as separate entities, much like a Frame Relay or ATM network.

JPCI Telecoms' MPLS VPN offer:

  • Any-to-Any IP connectivity - Optimal routing without PVCs
  • Improved latency - Avoid tandem routing through a hub (offload hub router)
  • Any IP Address Scheme - Intranets and extranets
  • Circuit consolidation - Eliminate aggregation layer, if using a Layer 3 VPN, for all sites
  • Cost effective
  • Diversity Via IP Routing - Simplified Disaster Recovery and inherent redundancy
  • Ease of network expansion
  • High speed access support - Up to OC192
  • Access Technology Agnostic - Frame Relay, ATM, PPP over DS0-OC48; Ethernet, DSL, etc...
  • IP Class of Service
  • Provider-Based IP VPN - No requirement for CPE-based tunneling and encryption equipment/software.

  • Retail stores - FeaturePlus will rationalise the number of phone lines per shop and remove call charges for calls made between stores. There is an extensive list of convenience stores, garden centres, wine shops, etc. using FeaturePlus.

  • Home workers - Ideally suited to the the home environment allowing calls to be transferred seamlessly whether your home is close to the business or in another country.
  • Small international offices - linked into the UK businesses with UK phone numbers; inter-company calls are free!
Feature Plus Case Study - Manufacturing Company
The problem

A small manufacturing company was expanding quickly and was operating using just one PSTN line with a number of wireless handsets off the one number. Transferring calls between departments was difficult and appeared unprofessional to the caller. If the line was busy, they had no way of handling the next call.

The Solution

The broadband line was upgraded to ADSL Annex-M, which provided a much higher data upload rate. This enabled the single broadband line to share both data and voice over the one broadband link ,with Quality of Service applied to the line, ensuring that speech quality was not compromised. Our FeaturePlus hosted telephony service was overlaid on to the broadband service, enabling the customer to manage all calls with the professionalism and increase in productivity they required. Call charges were also reduced compared with the previous BT bills.

Feature Plus Case Study - Managed Office Environment
The problem

A newly converted Managed Office services company wanted to provide telephony services to its customers. These would range from single-person customer through to multi-tenanted offices of up to fifteen staff. The management company wanted control over the bills for individual customers at the same time as giving the customers the greatest flexibility in how they used their telephone system; total privacy from other users and complete self management of the system.

The Solution

To cover such a large number of simultaneous callers - up to twenty-five, we had to bond a number of ADSL Annex-M broadband lines to ensure that sufficient connectivity was available. FeaturePlus is fully self-managed and so relieved the management company of any requirement to administer the system. It is also scalable up to many users across multiple sites and so enabled those tenants who had satellite offices, to make free calls between sites, significantly reducing their inter-office call charges.
